Emergency agencies and meteorological departments in both countries raised alerts to the highest level, advising coastal areas that evacuations were a possibility.

The earthquake occurred at a magnitude of 7.8, and affected the Kamchatka region on the eastern edge of Russia in the early morning – it was strong enough in nearby locations, where the earthquake could be felt, and immediately started analyzing for possible tsunami threat across the Pacific Rim.

Possible Tsunami Effects:

Experts estimate that if tsunami waves develop as a result of tonight’s earthquake and earthquakes that occurred earlier today, those waves could reach Japan in approximately 2-3 hours and Hawaii in 6-8 hours.
